Domus PictA Winery

7 July 2024

Domus PictA – Northern Italy, Conegliano-Valdobbiadene region. The original and inspiring villa pictured on the labels of Prosecco bottles from the Domus-PictA winery is today, and has been for nearly 100 years, the home of the Spagnol family.

The house perches on a hill above the winding River Piave. Its frescoes and history are full of events from the 1900s. A villa that survived the world wars was renovated by the family in the 1980s, bringing to life the beauty of the breathtaking decorations by Italian painter Guido Cadorin.

It was the year 1923 when Cadorin was commissioned to create a fresco for the Vidor parish (Sign of the Angel's Resurrection). Inspired, the artist prepared a design for "sgraffito" decoration (note: a Renaissance technique for decorating plaster surfaces of buildings) on all the walls of the villa, with a frescoed frieze under the roof depicting the four seasons. Following the Veneto tradition, he created a work that achieved significant success and highlighted the charming character of the entire building. He invented "sgraffito" on a sepia background with shades of green and yellow earth.

From these beginnings, deep historical roots, and Veneto tradition, the Spagnol family decided it was time to share their love and passion for Prosecco. The drawing of the image—Domus PictA ("painted house" in Latin)—thus fully embodies the newly born winery. The connection to history, nature, and art is tangible, so it was logical to begin by developing what they had always done only for fun and friends, and to utilize everything they had created since 1861, when Italy was unified. To celebrate this date, so significant for creativity, good food, and design, Domus-PictA was born—today a winery that embraces the history and tradition of Italy.

While Domus-PictA can be considered a young winery today, its roots trace back to 1848 when Nonno Oni Spagnol discovered his passion for wine, love for Prosecco, and joy in growing vines. This passion has been passed down through subsequent generations.

The winery's new headquarters is a meticulously renovated, respectable architectural work that flourishes in the very heart of Prosecco production in Valdobbiadene. Furnished with the latest equipment, it is lovingly cared for by capable and experienced technicians. It now offers nine high-quality products ranging from medium to high-end levels.

Today, Domus-PictA produces nearly 800 thousand bottles of wine annually, and we can offer you a taste of this magnificent Prosecco in the highest DOCG appellation from the Valdobbiadene region.
