Starring Prosecco as the "Heart of the Modern Spritz"

4 August 2025

A refreshing revolution in summer drinks. Today, Prosecco is not only a symbol of Italian charm but also the foundation of one of the biggest trends of recent years: Spritz-type mixed cocktails. These light, refreshing drinks have won the hearts of aperitif lovers worldwide, and their popularity continues to grow. A Spritz is long since not just about Aperol anymore; other variations with Limoncello, elderflower liqueur, fruit liqueurs, and exotic flavors are coming into the spotlight.

Why is Spritz so popular?

•  The main reason is its lightness and lower alcohol content. A Spritz is the ideal choice for long summer days and evenings when you don't want to drink heavy drinks containing hard spirits.

•  Simple preparation, because you only need three ingredients – Prosecco, liqueur, and soda – and ice. My advice? The more ice, the tastier the drink.

•  Great variability of flavors, because everyone will find their own favorite combination, from citrus to floral, or with fruity notes.

•  Attractive appearance! A Spritz is a visually very appealing drink and for that reason too, it is perfectly suited for photos on social networks.

And who are the biggest stars of the Spritz scene?

Aperol Spritz - A classic that never gets old. The combination of Prosecco, Aperol, and soda creates an iconic orange drink with a gently bittersweet taste and notes of orange and herbs. The original recipe is 3 parts Prosecco, 2 parts Aperol, and 1 part soda, served with ice and a slice of orange, but if you mix it in a completely different ratio, as you please, the important thing is that you like it. And if you improve your Aperol Spritz with a little fresh orange juice, the drink is perfection itself.

Limoncello Spritz - For lovers of fresh citrus flavors, there is Limoncello Spritz. A sweeter, lemon liqueur, Limoncello, combined with Prosecco and soda creates a summer explosion of refreshing flavors. It pairs perfectly with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint or thyme.

Hugo Spritz - Hugo is a gentle, floral Spritz, with elderflower liqueur (most often St-Germain, but in the Czech Republic, elderflower liqueur from Rudolf Jelínek is used), Prosecco, soda, lime, and mint. Originally a regional specialty from South Tyrol, today one of the biggest hits in European bars. Hugo is light, aromatic, and perfectly refreshing.

Sarti Spritz - A new star of Summer 2025! Sarti Spritz scores with a fruity character with notes of blood orange, mango, and passion fruit. The combination of Prosecco, Sarti Rosa liqueur, and soda creates a pink, modern, and distinctly fruity drink that is quickly gaining fans, especially among the younger generation.

Arancello Spritz - Arancello, an orange liqueur, gives the Spritz an intense citrus flavor and vibrant color. In combination with Prosecco, soda, and possibly a little bitters, a drink is created that is a sweeter and fruitier alternative to the classic Aperol Spritz. It stands out perfectly with a slice of orange or blood orange.

Mandarinello Spritz - Mandarinello is a less well-known but all the more interesting mandarin liqueur. Mandarinello Spritz is exceptional for its aromatic, bittersweet taste and freshness. Just mix Mandarinello, Prosecco, and soda, garnish with mint and an orange or mandarin twist. The result is an original summer drink that will excite citrus lovers and, believe me, usually you won't end up with just one drink.

Campari Spritz - Campari Spritz is a refreshing cocktail and although the Campari brand is over 50 years older than Aperol, the Spritz with its iconic bitter became its bitter and more aromatic competitor much later. It consists of Prosecco, Campari, and soda water in the same proportion as a classic Spritz.

About Spritz one could write for a long time and so I will keep something for next time.
